Construction of Spaceport America, the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport, continues for the 110,152 square foot Terminal Hanger Facility, as well as for the Airfield Rescue/Fire Facility. The Terminal Hanger incorporates a sweeping space age design and will house the operations offices of Virgin Galactic World Headquarters. Requests for Proposals have been issued for general, protective and technical services.
The completed multi-layer 10,000-foot x 200-foot runway was dedicated October 2010. It is designed to accommodate almost any aircraft in the world, and specifically returning launch vehicles, fly-back rocket boosters and other space launch and training vehicles.
Sightseeing tours are scheduled every Friday, Saturday and Sunday and are designed to highlight New Mexico history spanning from Spanish conquistadors and pioneer rocket research to the new commercial space industry.
The 18,000-acre spaceport is located approximately 45 miles north of Las Cruces and 30 miles southeast of Truth or Consequences.
