The Doña Ana Arts Council offers two Feed Your Mind seminar series with the popular art historian, Kathleen Key, beginning at the end of April and early May. The first is a nine-week series on late 19th century and 20th century art, and the second is a nine-week series on the history of fashion and fashion design. Presentations take place at the DAAC Arts & Cultural Center, 1740 Calle de Mercado in the Bulletin Plaza in Mesilla.
Kim Kirschbaum, who moved from Iowa to Las Cruces in 2017 with her husband Tom, has attended several of Kathleen Key’s classes. “I can’t wait for her next session,” says Kim. “If you think art history is dull and dry, a presentation by Kathleen Key is 180 degrees from boring! Lively conversation and scholarly hilarity makes for an enlightening yet enjoyable evening.”
Starting on Monday, April 29, 3 – 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 7 p.m.: Late 19th and 20th Century Art with Kathleen Key. The nine-week series continues Mondays through June 24. Participants may attend either session, from 3 – 4:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 7 p.m. The price for the series is $90. Individual sessions are $20 each.
Presenter Kathleen Key says, “This class is nine weeks of fantastic art from the last of the 19th century, the entire 20th century and a little from the 21st century! We will review the Impressionists, and then begin with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and the many artists who were influenced by the Cubist movement. Next will be Henri Matisse and artists in the Fauvist movement. Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Franz Marc, and the artists in the German Expressionist movement will be our third lecture. We will also cover the Bauhaus movement in Germany and Dada and Surrealism in Europe as well as modernist artists working in the US before 1950. The last lectures will feature art after World War II with artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper johns, Georgia O’Keefe, Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, Luis Jimenez, and many others. Throughout this class, we will include the works of great architects and photographers from our time frame.”
Starting Thursday, May 2, 1:30 – 3 p.m.: The History of Fashion and Fashion Design with Kathleen Key. This series continues Thursday afternoons through June 27. The nine-part series will delve into fashion and fashion design over the centuries, from 1750 to the present. The price for the series is $90. Individual sessions may be attended for $20 each
Kathleen Key describes the series, “Come study not only the fashions and styles of each era starting in 1750 and continuing on through to the present day, but also the famous designers and their work. In this class, we will study both men’s and women’s fashions, hairstyles, shoes, and accessories, as well as the work of famous fashion designers from each decade such as Coco Chanel, Cristobal Balenciaga, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, and many more. This class will feature both European and American designers, but we will include designers from all over the globe.”
