October 2, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Get ArtRageous! Modern Brush Lettering with Gail Lieurance. Learn the beauty of brush lettering with brush-tip markers — from letterforms to writing words, and creating a card. This class is for beginners. Gail Lieurance is a calligrapher and a retired LCPS educator. She currently teaches art classes for women, focusing on lettering, art journaling, watercolors, and mixed media projects. These two-hour art classes offer a great experience to experiment with a new technique or improve already established skills. The class is $35 and includes all materials and light refreshments. October 5, One-day Artist Workshop: Medieval Leather Bookbinding with Linda Elkins. Students will make a leather-bound book. Schedule: Saturday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The cost is $100 for the workshop and includes all materials and light refreshments.
October 7, 14 and 21, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Feed Your Mind: The Art of Italy; Seminars 5, 6 & 7 of the 12-week art history and cultural series with Kathleen Key. October 7, 14 & 21 will cover Florence, with every church and most museums in Florence, including San Miniato, Fiesole, Siena, Pisa, Lucca, Perugia, San Gimignano, Cortona, Assisi. The seminars will continue Monday evenings through December 9 (except NO classes on October 28 and November 4). Cost is $120 for 12 weeks or $20 per individual seminar.

October 12, 4 – 7 p.m.: Second Saturday 10-10 Arts Hop Opening reception for visual artist Abel Garcia of Dallas and tattoo artist Diane Basler-White from Syncere Tattoos in Las Cruces. Abel Garcia is a native Las Crucen who has a gallery and studio in Dallas, Texas. His vibrant, large-scale work was recently featured at the Lincoln Center in New York. Garcia will be demonstrating his painting technique during the reception. Tattoo artist Diane Basler-White will also be demonstrating her tattoo artistry during the reception. The reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit also will be available for viewing from October 7 – October 30 during DAAC regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
October 12, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.: Classical Drinking. This is the second of a new live music series that will feature regional musicians in a relaxed atmosphere. Dry Point Distillers will offer a cash bar with cocktails and non-alcoholic options. The second Classical Drinking event on The October 12 show will be a solo guitar show with Marcos Cavalcante, as currently billed, but he is also going to include two special guests, Hyerim Mapp on cello, and Madelyn Moore on clarinet. The show will be mostly classical compositions with a little jazz and Brazilian music added. Cost: $15 at the door or in advance at daarts.org or at DAAC office 575-523-6403.

October 18, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: One-day Artist Workshop: Create a Treasure Mirror. Bring some of your favorite trinkets, or just peruse the collection of Vickie’s treasures to design a collage mirror. Schedule: Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. All materials and light refreshments provided. Cost is $125 for the one-day workshop; DAAC members receive a 20% discount.

October 25, Noon to 1:30 p.m.: Promoting Art in the Mesilla Valley educational/networking meeting for all who are interested in the arts. The topic for October will be “Creative Problem Solving” with David Senk. David wants to encourage artists to build networks, teach artists how to use social media for sales, and educate the public on, “why we pay artist to create.” Free and open to the public. All are welcome.
